Quantum technology and computing

We can no longer imagine a day without the presence of smart devices. Phones accompany us every step of the way, watches measure our vital signs and no office can be without a good computer. But among all the devices available, there are some that stand out above the rest in terms of performance, and these are supercomputers. Their potential is used not only by scientists but also by entrepreneurs, for example in the field of computationally intensive modelling, simulations or advanced data analysis.

This field represents a key innovation of the future that has the potential to revolutionise computing power, data security and modelling of complex systems. These technologies, using the principles of quantum physics, enable the solution of problems that are virtually intractable for classical computers or would require extremely long computation times.

The region can develop intensively in this area, and currently boasts the achievements of IT4Innovations (VŠB-TUO), where the first quantum computer in the Czech Republic has been installed thanks to the HE LUMI-Q project. In addition, a specialised laboratory for quantum computing has been created here, which serves as a key point for research and application of these technologies, and the University of Mining and Metallurgy (VŠB-TUO) is the first in the country to open a study course focused on quantum informatics.

This development provides a solid foundation for further innovation and provides new opportunities in industry, science and education, thereby significantly strengthening the region’s innovation ecosystem. Quantum computing can provide breakthrough applications in many areas, including optimisation of industrial processes, simulation of materials with new properties or the development of advanced cryptographic methods.

With these advances, MSK can become an important player in the field of quantum technologies and contribute to a sustainable and competitive economy not only in the region, but also in the wider national and international context.
