Research results of the team of prof. Mgr. Jana Kukutschová, Ph.D. (VŠB-TUO) for the first time on the world’s leading presentation platform TEDxUNYP. Are nanoparticles an invisible miracle or a hidden threat?

The research by which scientists in Ostrava have shown that heavy metals are found in the amniotic fluid of unborn babies or in the internal organs of adults has aroused considerable interest in the world scientific community. It was a groundbreaking finding that has become a topic in legislative circles. Expert research into the nanoparticles that are released from tyres and brake pads when cars are braked has become the basis for changes in thinking about materials used globally in the automotive industry.

What do we know about nanoparticles? Are they a risk or a help to human health and the environment? These questions were the subject of the first ever presentation at the forum by speakers from around the world, this time with the theme “Breaking Barriers”.

“The effects of nanoparticles on humans is a broad topic. When we talk only about the health risks of nanomaterials and nanoparticles, it turns out that we still don’t know a lot and there are still areas where we only expect what the impacts will be, especially with long-term exposure. That is why we are now talking more about precaution. Especially where our little ones may be at risk, which concerns, for example, the avalanche application of nanoparticles in kindergartens, which we witnessed after the covid pandemic,” says Jana Kukutschová – Vice-Rector for Science and Research at VŠB-TUO, who is also the guarantor of the Nanotechnology study programme.

The TEDx platform is famous for its careful selection of topics and speakers. It offers a unique space for scientists from all over the world to communicate their work beyond scientific journals and conferences, bridging the gap between their knowledge and the public and making complex topics accessible. “We choose speakers who are personalities and have practical insights. I approached Professor Kukutsch after learning about her pioneering work in nanoparticle research. She makes highly technical science accessible to people, brings unique insights to the conversation and shows how the seemingly invisible world of nanoparticles can have a significant impact on our everyday lives,” said Amit Grinvald – TEDxUNYP organizer.

The expert team led by Professor Kukutsch continues to research nanoparticles released from tyres and brake pads when cars brake. They are focusing in particular on their impact on the environment and human health and are looking for innovative solutions to reduce these emissions. At the same time, they are deepening their collaboration with industry to translate the results of their research into practical applications as quickly as possible. In parallel, they focus on the increasingly topical issue of microplastics and their impact on the environment and human health.
