CirkAréna – Circular Economy R&D Centre

Importance for the region

CirkArena is a planned research and development centre for the circular economy. It will concentrate excellent scientific and innovation teams and capacities with the ambition to integrate its sites in Třinec and Ostrava into the system of national reference laboratories.

The centre will focus on research on waste – industrial waste specific to the Moravian-Silesian region, such as slag and dust, bio-waste and construction waste – and thus contribute to the transformation of the Moravian-Silesian region.

CirkArena builds on a broad partnership of research and educational organizations and the public sector. It will be a bridge between the technology and knowledge base and will help accelerate R&D, innovation and education activities in the circular economy.

The Cirk Arena project is part of the broader SMARt And Green District (SMARAGD) strategy, which offers the region a comprehensive solution to society’s challenges in the areas of materials, energy, environment and IT in a coherent area and is made up of several mutually synergistic projects with planned multi-source funding.

  • The idea of creating CirkArena is based on the industrial history of the region and the current transformation of the regional economy. It is also directly linked to the European climate goals and the move towards a low-carbon economy.
  • The building itself will be a unique example of the circular economy in the construction industry. It will be created by recycling a brownfield – the old WerkArena in Třinec. Construction is being carried out using the Design & Build method.
