Field

Engineering technology

Robert Čep was appointed Professor of Mechanical Engineering Technology in 2018, served as Vice-Dean for Personnel Development and Doctoral Studies and has been Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at VŠB-TUO since 2020. He is also a member of the Control Board of the Technical University of Technology. He is professionally focused on metal and alloy machining, engineering metrology, evaluation of surface integrity characteristics, as well as postprocessing of additive technologies using AI and machine learning. He has authored and co-authored a number of technical articles, books, scripts and teaching texts.

He has collaborated with experts from a number of foreign universities, e.g. Vel Tech R&D Institute of Science and Technology, India (Dr. Kanak Kalita); Manipal Institute of Technology, India (Dr. Ranjan Ghadai); Gazi Üniversitesi Ankara, Turkey (Prof. Sachin Salunke); Poznan University of Technology (Prof. Stanislaw Legutko); University of Rijeka (Prof. Zlatan Car) and others.

Research, activities and impact

In his professional career he has led several projects as a principal investigator for VŠB-TUO, e.g. TAČR TN01000010 National Centre of Competence in Mechatronics and Smart Technologies for Engineering MESTEC II, MIT TRIO FV10717 Development of a new series of cryogenic ball valves, their production and testing technologies, TAČR TREND FW06010775 Research and development of productive tools and technologies for machining high-precision holes withdefined integrity of the machined surface, GAČR Standard Project GA19-032882S Effect of complex loading modes on the lifetime of machine parts produced by 3D printing and many others.

He has supervised more than 100 bachelor and master theses, which were mainly written for industry, and 12 PhD students have successfully completed their studies under his supervision.

Its graduates are basically 100% employable in the labour market. Most of them have a job already secured during their studies and before the state examinations, and the others get it almost immediately. The hunger for engineers is huge, and companies are racing with benefits to get students. Mechanical engineers can be found in almost every sector of human activity, from industry, food processing, healthcare and aerospace. Everywhere there is a need to design, manufacture and build some machine that produces or helps humans, and graduates of only one field can do that – mechanical engineers.

“Engineering is a beautiful and interesting field. It is a field that is not simple, but offers a plethora of problems to solve using modern methods and devices, including the use of AI. Machinist are employed almost everywhere, in almost all human activities and their work is often irreplaceable.”
