The story of the Silesian University in Opava begins in a period of great change after 1989, when the desire for a university of its own was born in the heart of Silesia. Initially it functioned as two faculties of Masaryk University in Brno, but on 9 July 1991 it embarked on its own journey and became an independent and award-winning university based in Opava. Today, the university is made up of five key components: the Faculty of Arts and Sciences in Opava, the Faculty of Business and Entrepreneurship in Karviná, the Faculty of Public Policy in Opava, the Institute of Mathematics in Opava and the Institute of Physics in Opava. Although it is one of the smaller Czech universities with almost 5,000 students, it offers more than 80 study programmes and specialisations of all forms and types, including programmes in English or at doctoral level, and cooperates intensively with other universities at international level – it is, among others, a member of the European University Association and the STARS EU Alliance of European Universities. In addition, the university also offers dozens of courses within the framework of lifelong learning and the University of the Third Age. The Silesian University focuses intensively on linking studies with practice, developing innovative forms of teaching and promoting sustainability both within its own operations and in its home towns and the entire Moravian-Silesian Region.

It is headed from March 2023 by the rector doc. Mgr. Tomáš Gongol, Ph.D., who is leading it to further development and fulfillment of its vision.
