Next year the current strategic plan of the University of Ostrava will expire. The International Council of the OU is also involved in the planning process of the new strategic plan. International experience should bring new approaches and content.

The November meeting of the International Council of the University of Ostrava was attended by all nine foreign members, who came to Ostrava from universities in the Netherlands, Italy, Romania, Germany, Hungary and the USA.

“We want to know the foreign experience and perspective on the given areas, how foreign universities manage to develop them and what tools and strategies they choose to do so. We are interested in the extent to which individual faculty, staff or students are involved in the direction of the university abroad. Our goal is to create a strategic plan that is truly participatory,” said Petr Kopecký, Rector of the University of Ostrava.

The new strategic plan should be valid from 2026 to 2030. In many ways it will build on the previous period, but it will also include a number of new approaches and areas.

In his introductory speech, Ondřej Slach, Vice-Rector for Strategy and Development, presented the three basic pillars on which the new strategic plan will be based, namely economic, environmental and social sustainability.

“We want to continue with the existing plans and goals, we will not resort to any radical changes. On the other hand, any plan, and not only a university plan, always needs to be enriched with information, knowledge and life experience from abroad. At the same time, we perceive the importance of a context that may be different from foreign universities, so we are rather looking for principles and ideas that can be transferred and have as a source of innovation and inspiration,” he said.

The joint session was divided into four “roundtables”, with each focusing on a different topic, namely teaching and learning, science and research, internationalisation and social responsibility. Discussants mainly debated new trends and approaches, discussing what ideas make sense to develop further.
