The EUMaster4HPC Summer School, held from 18 to 24 August 2024 at VŠB – Technical University Ostrava, brought together students from universities across Europe for an intensive week of data science education using supercomputers.
The event was attended by more than 40 Master’s students from eight universities involved in the pan-European EUMaster4HPC programme. Thanks to the sponsorship of MathWorks, other students from the Czech Republic, Italy, France and Iceland were also able to join the summer school.
During the week, students focused on preparing datasets, understanding their main characteristics and modelling and simulating them on supercomputers using open-source libraries and programming languages such as R, Python, Scikit-Learn, PyTorch, Tensorflow and others. They also engaged in hands-on projects in MATLAB, where they worked on high-performance computing, deep learning, image processing, and signal analysis using real data on the Karolina supercomputer at IT4Innovations.
The instructors, including Ondřej Meca, Radek Halfar, Simeon Harrison, Tomáš Martinovič, Franziska Albers and Mike Croucher, adapted the educational content to the diverse needs of all participants. Karina Pešatová, Senior Event Coordinator for IT4Innovations, looked back on the preparations. In addition to the technical content, we organised team-building activities aimed at developing key soft skills such as teamwork, time management, strategy and organisation. These activities also allowed students from different universities and countries to network and explore cultural differences.”
Tomáš Kozubek, Scientific Director of IT4Innovations emphasized the importance of the event: “Hosting the EUMaster4HPC Summer School in Ostrava was a unique opportunity to showcase our supercomputing (HPC) infrastructure. The students were able to learn about the latest technologies and real-world applications in the field of data science, which provided them with invaluable experience for their future careers.”
The event was organised by the IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Centre, part of the VŠB – Technical University Ostrava, in cooperation with the Vienna Scientific Cluster (VSC), part of TU Wien (TUW), and MathWorks. Special thanks go to the students whose enthusiasm and commitment made the event a success and the week truly unforgettable.
“Summer School – HPC and Data Science – lectures, hands-on exercises, programming challenges, quizzes, student team competitions, social events – there was no shortage of them all. It was a great event!” concludes Simeon Harrison from the Vienna Scientific Cluster.
