The buildings in Reální Street in the centre of the regional capital, which house the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ostrava, are undergoing extensive reconstruction. It will bring a modern and energy-efficient environment for students, teachers, staff and employees. The project is co-financed by the European Union from the Jan Amos Komenský Operational Programme and also from the Modernisation Fund, which is administered by the State Environmental Fund of the Czech Republic.

The current construction works are part of a massive modernisation during which thirteen properties of the University of Ostrava will undergo reconstruction this year and in the next two years. The largest part of the investment is directed to complete renovation of the interiors with an emphasis on a fully barrier-free environment, the acquisition of modern equipment and technology and new furnishings.

“These extensive reconstructions strengthen the competitiveness of the University of Ostrava. They will make studying more accessible to a wider range of interested men and women and offer greater comfort to current students. The improvement of the infrastructure will also contribute to the further development of the University,” said Petr Kopecký, Rector of the University of Ostrava. The reconstruction of the Faculty of Arts buildings, costing nearly CZK 250 million, should be completed in December 2027. It is a significant step towards sustainable and ecological functioning of the University of Ostrava, which has long been committed to a responsible approach to the environment.

“In the case of the Faculty of Arts, not only will the energy consumption of the buildings marked D and DM be reduced, but also the quality of the internal environment will be improved – lighting will be modernised, shading elements will be installed and measures will be taken to promote a healthy and comfortable study environment. Among other things, a new psychological laboratory designed for teaching or a research room will be created here,” said Ondřej Slach, Vice-Rector for Strategy and Development of the University of Ostrava.

Teachers, staff and employees of the Faculty of Arts who worked in the buildings in Reální Street temporarily moved to the building of the VŠB – Technical University Ostrava on Havlíčkův nábřeží due to the reconstruction.

“Thanks to the activity of the Rector of the University of Ostrava, Petr Kopecký, we managed to negotiate the lease of this building with the VŠB-TUO, which became available due to the move of their Faculty of Economics to the VŠB-TUO campus. However, the condition was that the new tenant would occupy the premises immediately afterwards, i.e. from September last year,” said Vice-Rector Ondřej Slach.

The reconstruction of the buildings of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ostrava is co-financed by the following subsidy programmes – ENERGov 2/2023 OU: Reducing energy consumption for the future No. 7236200096, University of Ostrava: PRO Development and Innovation, Reg. No. CZ.02.02.01/00/23_023/0009043 and University of Ostrava: PRO Equal Opportunities in Education, Reg. No. CZ.02.02.01/00/23_024/0009044.

Thanks to investments from the Modernisation Fund, roughly 65,000 tonnes of coal will be saved annually in the Czech Republic, which is equivalent to 1,400 loaded wagons. In addition, CO2 emissions will be reduced by 1.6 million tonnes.
